Scanning negatives into digital images

These often dust away in a drawer somewhere, preventing you from sharing your valuable memories with the rest of the family. Negatives are also subject to loss of quality.

By having your negatives digitized, you instantly create a secure backup of these precious memories. Also, you can easily share the digital images, via email or social media, with family and friends. In addition, you can make a beautiful new (digital) photo book with these digital images.

We can professionally scan your negatives into digital images for you. We then put these on a USB stick, hard drive or download link. This way you can view the negatives on your (smart) TV, computer, phone or tablet.

Prices

Here is an overview of the types of negatives we can digitize. The price we charge depends on the type of negative. The more negatives you have digitized, the lower the price per negative.

All prices include 21% VAT.

We do not have a minimum number of negatives per order. We do use one-off set-up costs per order of 7,50 for transfering this type of material.

Negatives on strip/roll – 35mm (24×36mm) and semi-35mm (18x24mm)

We can scan negative strips (about 5 or 6 negatives on a strip) and negatives on a roll. We can even scan negatives that have been cut from a strip or roll. All photos will be corrected for colour, light, dust and scratches. The infra red correction of dust and scratches doesn’t work as well with black and white photos as it does with colour photos.

The negatives are converted to digital (positive) photos. We provide each folder/envelope with a sticker with a unique number. We scan to JPEG format and all pictures are given a serial number as the file name.

The price is charged per photo, all photos on the strip (of at least 2 shots) will be scanned. If you only want specific shots of a strip scanned in, or when supplying a strip with only one negative, we charge an additional fee of $0.39 per photo.

Pocket format negatives, “110 film” (13×17mm)

The pocket-size negative, also called “110 film,” often consists of strips of 4-6 shots. We can also scan strips of 1 shot. The size of the pocket negatives is 13x17cm. Because they are small images, the resolution at 3000 dpi is about 1200×1800 pixels. A higher resolutions will make the digital photo look grainy. All photos will be corrected for colour, light, dust and scratches. The infra red correction of dust and scratches doesn’t work as well with black and white photos as it does with colour photos.

File formats

We can supply just about all common formats. We normally use JPEG format. This gives a very good quality while the files don’t get too large. We can also provide the photos in an uncompressed file. TIFF is a common format for this. This format is often used in professional printing. However, this format creates much larger files: with a 35mm negative scan at 4000 DPI, a TIFF file is about 70 MB in size.

Technique

We use professional scanners. For 35mm slides, negatives and pocket-sized negatives, we use the Nikon Coolscan 5000ED. The slides and negatives scanners have a true optical resolution of 4000 DPI. Using the Digital ICE4 Advanced automatic correction function, scratches, damages and fingerprints are automatically removed from slides and negatives. Our scanners are the best tested in many independent tests.

Our process

  • Envelopes/folders/boxes containing negatives are labeled with a sticker with a unique number upon arrival.
  • Each negative is scanned to a separate digital photograph in JPEG format. The file name is the unique number followed by a sequence number. This allows you to see exactly which negatives came from which envelope. You can edit these filenames yourself afterwards.
  • The negatives are all scanned at our own location. There is a lot of hand work involved here, as the negative strips are scanned photo by photo.
