Explanation video8 / hi8 / digital8 recordings (8mm video format):
The 8mm video format informally refers to three related video cassette formats. These are the original Video8 format (analog recording) and its improved successor Hi8 (analog video and analog audio, but with provisions for digital audio), as well as a more recent digital recording format known as Digital8.
Video8, hi8 and Digital8 all use the same type of tape. However, these tapes can have different recording formats. If you want to play back a tape, and you do not know in which format it is stored, it is best to use a digital8 camera that can also play back video8 and hi8 tapes. For example when the digital8 camera was introduced, the argument was, now you can use your current hi8 tapes to make digital quality recordings in digital8 (on these hi8 tapes). So many hi8 tapes, therefore contain digital8 recordings.
What makes it even more complicated is that there are also recordings in PAL/SECAM/NTSC, which again all require separate cameras. And then there are some exceptions such as PCM.
If in doubt, you can also have the tapes digitized by a specialized digitization company such as Van Eck Video Services.
