How do you prepare super 8 films for projection?

(This also applies to other type of films such as double8, 9.5mm, 16mm, 35mm, etc)

If you let us digitize your films you don’t have to do this yourself. This is included in our digitizing service.

Super 8 films are a wonderful way to capture and relive memories, but to play them correctly and without damage on a film projector, proper preparation is essential. Below we discuss step by step how best to go about this.

1. Check the film and reels

Before you begin, carefully inspect the film and reels. Look for:

  • Damage: such as cracks, fractures or deformations.
  • Contamination: Dust, mold or sticky residue can damage the projector.
  • Proper reel size: Make sure your projector is compatible with the reel size of your film (for example, 50ft, 200ft, 400ft or larger).

2. Clean the film

Dirt and dust can not only reduce image quality but also cause damage to the projector. Use a soft cloth and film cleaner to gently clean the film. Slowly unwrap the film and wipe both sides clean.

3. Check and repair perforations

The small holes along the edges of the film, the perforations, are essential for smooth passage through the projector. Damaged perforations can cause jamming and tearing. Use a film perforation repair kit or special perforation tape to repair any damage.

4. Check assembly and add leader if necessary

A good leader (the transparent or black film piece at the beginning and end of the film) is important to safely load the film into the projector without damaging the first frame.

  • Is the leader missing? Then add at least 30 centimeters of run-on strip.
  • Check the film direction: Make sure the film is rolled up correctly so that the image does not play back upside down or backwards.

5. Check glue seams and splicers

If your film is composed of several pieces, check the glue seams and splicers (connection points between film pieces). If these loosen, use a film splicer with appropriate film cement or splicing tape to repair the film.

6. Test the projector before playing the movie

Before loading your Super 8 film, test the projector:

  • Clean the film barrel and gears.
  • Check that the lamp is working and that the lens is clean.
  • Make sure the drive belts and motor are running smoothly.

7. Correctly loading the film

Follow your projector’s instructions for correctly loading the film. Make sure the film runs properly through the barrel and gears to avoid jamming.
-> If you can’t find your projector manual? You can purchase the manual of almost all projectors as a .PDF for a small fee. To do this, go to the Van Eck parts finder: https://van-eck.net/onderdelenzoeker/ and select your brand and type of projector.

8. Setting the right speed and sharpness

Super 8 movies are usually played back at 18 fps or 24 fps. Check which speed is appropriate for your film. Adjust focus by gently adjusting the lens.

Conclusion

By making these preparations carefully, you will ensure that your Super 8 film is projected smoothly and without damage. This not only extends the life of your film and projector, but also ensures that you can enjoy the nostalgic images to the fullest!
